That iconic, romantic train whistle is actually just pressurized vapor screaming through a metal slot. The boiler that pushes the massive drive wheels also routes highly pressurized steam up through a carefully tuned brass whistle. It was a functional necessity to warn people to get out of the way of hundreds of tons of iron.
