In 1849, James K. Polk's term ended on a Sunday, and Zachary Taylor refused to be sworn in on the Sabbath. This technically left David Rice Atchison, the president pro tempore of the Senate, in charge for exactly 24 hours. His grand contribution to the highest office in the land was sleeping through most of it because he had been up late the night before.
