Why pencil graphite is mixed with clay

HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

Writing with pure graphite is a miserable experience because it turns to useless dust under the slightest pressure. To make the humble pencil functional, manufacturers grind raw graphite into a fine powder and aggressively mix it with water and kaolin clay. By tweaking the ratio of clay, they bake rods of varying hardness, sacrificing deep black color for a point that doesn't shatter when you press down.
