The smooth, digitally scrolling text you see news anchors reading today has incredibly humble, highly manual origins. The very first teleprompter was literally just a giant scroll of butcher paper with dialogue written on it in massive black marker. A terrified intern sat directly under the camera lens, furiously turning a mechanical hand crank to keep the text moving as the actor awkwardly read.
