Electric guitars were built to beat brass bands
The electric guitar wasn't invented because musicians aggressively wanted to distort their tone and smash things; it was born out of pure acoustic desperation. In massive 1930s big bands, the humble acoustic guitar was getting completely drowned out by the obscenely loud brass sections. Electrification was merely a survival tactic just so the poor guitarist could actually be heard over the trumpets.
