The electronic thump that drives modern hip-hop and techno has deeply religious origins. The very first commercially produced drum machines were explicitly marketed to conservative churches that couldn't afford a real drummer for their organ recitals. They pumped out rigid, highly un-funky waltz and polka rhythms to back up the choir, completely unaware they were laying the groundwork for disco.
