Before the Steadicam, moving a camera required laying down massive literal train tracks or accepting highly nauseating, shaky footage. Inventor Garrett Brown created a complex system of counterweights and springs to isolate the camera from the operator's footsteps. He definitively proved it worked by flawlessly chasing a terrifying child on a tricycle through the hallways in 'The Shining'.
