The Qing dynasty stationed its elite Eight Banner soldiers across the empire but was terrified they would go soft. To prevent laziness, commanders enforced brutal monthly archery quotas, ruthlessly slashing the salary of any soldier who couldn't reliably blast a heavy arrow through a target.
