Why Fiji chose a $7 note
Fiji’s unusual denomination was part of the tribute. Rugby sevens is played with seven players per team, so a seven-dollar note made the sport’s defining number part of the celebration. The denomination was unusual for everyday cash, but immediately recognizable as a reference to the team’s game.
A victory made to circulate
Commemorative currency turns a national event into something people can handle and spend. Rather than keeping the Olympic win on a medal stand or in a news photograph, Fiji put it on a banknote designed to pass from wallet to wallet. The note honored the team’s historic gold in Rio while making the achievement visible in ordinary transactions.
That choice also gave the celebration a life beyond the Olympics. A coin or note can remain in circulation after the event has faded from the headlines, carrying its image into shops, homes, and collections. In Fiji, the $7 denomination joined the team’s victory to the sport’s name and number—so even the money itself told part of the story.
