The absolute pinnacle of cold-weather accessory fashion was dreamt up by a freezing fifteen-year-old in Maine. In 1873, Chester Greenwood grew completely irritated that his ears were freezing while ice skating, but he fiercely hated itchy scarves. He twisted a piece of wire and asked his grandmother to sew beaver fur on the ends, launching a wildly successful empire of ear muffs.
