Steam trains came before the modern bicycle

It turns out harnessing the explosive power of boiling water to move heavy metal was somehow easier than putting two wheels in a line. While early steam trains were chugging along by 1804, the modern pedal-driven bicycle didn't really hit the scene until the late 19th century. We literally conquered industrial mass transit before figuring out how to balance our own bodies on a metal frame.
