Measuring devastating earthquakes relies entirely on the fact that heavy things hate moving. A massive weight is suspended above a rolling drum of paper; when the ground shakes, the entire machine vibrates wildly, but inertia keeps the heavy weight perfectly still, allowing a pen attached to it to drag across the paper and record the chaos.
