Geography was clearly optional for 17th-century pirates who lacked a moral compass. Jan Janszoon was a Dutchman who converted to Islam, became a Barbary corsair, and decided the Mediterranean simply wasn't big enough. In 1627, he sailed his fleet of pirates all the way to the freezing coasts of Iceland, raiding peaceful fishing villages to kidnap hundreds of utterly confused locals for North African slave markets.
