Because microphones don't pick up the nuanced crunch of an actual human skull collapsing, Foley artists learned that aggressively stabbing a raw cabbage or snapping a thick stalk of celery right next to a high-fidelity mic perfectly mimics the horrifying sound of compound fractures and dismemberment. To this day, the most horrifying gore you hear in a podcast is likely just a very aggressive salad preparation.
