Chess players once stalled for hours on one move

In the mid-nineteenth century, high-stakes competitive chess tournaments had absolutely no official time limits per turn. Players would intentionally and agonizingly stall for hours on a single move, desperately hoping their mentally exhausted opponents would surrender out of pure fatigue, which eventually forced organizers to invent the standardized mechanical chess clock.
