Before she was just a giant copper lady holding an iPad and welcoming immigrants, she had an actual day job. For the first 16 years of its existence, the Statue of Liberty operated under the US Lighthouse Board. Her torch contained massive lamps that could be seen 24 miles out at sea, until they realized it was terribly inefficient and terribly expensive to run.
