During the 1952 US presidential election, the UNIVAC computer accurately predicted a massive landslide victory for Eisenhower long before the physical polls closed. Network executives thought the machine's algorithm was completely broken because human pollsters predicted a tight race. They refused to air the computer's results, only to be deeply embarrassed when the machine turned out to be flawlessly correct.
