A closer look
John B. Calhoun wanted to know what happens when society gets too crowded, so he built Universe 25, a literal utopia for mice with infinite food and zero predators. Instead of a peaceful paradise, it devolved into a dystopian nightmare. As the population exploded, the mice completely lost their minds. Society broke down into hyper-aggressive gangs, asexual shut-ins grooming themselves all day, and mothers abandoning their young. It was a bleak, violent behavioral sink that psychologists looked at and immediately said it perfectly mirrored modern urban living.
