A closer look
Groupthink is a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people in which the desire for harmony or conformity results in an irrational or dysfunctional decision-making outcome. To avoid being the one annoying person who ruins the vibe, everyone in a corporate meeting will passively agree to launch a terrible product or execute a spectacularly bad marketing campaign. Individual critical thinking is completely sacrificed on the altar of team unity, leading brilliant people to collectively make choices that a single average toddler would realize are catastrophic. It is the exact reason why cults, terrible start-up companies, and historically disastrous political campaigns happen with alarming frequency. The fear of social ostracization is so deeply ingrained in our DNA that we would literally rather drive the company straight off a cliff than politely disagree with the boss
