Gotham got its name from a phone directory

You would assume a legendary, brooding metropolis required months of architectural brainstorming. Instead, a hurried writer simply flipped open a physical telephone directory, blindly dragged his finger down the page, and stole the name directly from a random local jewelers listing, permanently christening Gotham.
