Why New York taxis are yellow

It turns out basic science doesn't always deeply account for aesthetic nausea. In 1915, businessman John Hertz excitedly read a dubious university study claiming yellow with a slight hint of red was the absolute most visible color from a distance, abruptly prompting him to paint his entire fleet of urban cabs like heavily bruised bananas just to aggressively outshine the local competition.
