Long before the "Hippie Trail" became a total cliché of the 1970s, the original overland route through the Middle East was abruptly strangled by cold, hard geopolitics. In 1963, escalating border tensions and shifting alliances effectively shattered the naive dream of casually driving a painted bus from London to Kathmandu. The romanticized open road was quickly replaced by hard borders and military checkpoints.
