Toy Story writers originally drafted Woody the cowboy as a deeply cynical, tyrannical ventriloquist dummy who physically abused the other toys and ruled the bedroom like a plastic dictator. Tom Hanks actually recorded lines for this wildly unlikable version before Pixar executives realized nobody would want to watch a movie about a sociopathic cowboy torturing an astronaut. Thank goodness they rewrote him to be merely insecure and mildly jealous, otherwise the beloved childhood classic would have felt more like a terrifying psychological thriller set in a preschool playroom
