A closer look
When a sea cucumber feels threatened by a crab or a fish, it doesn't bother running away. It opts for the nuclear option: evisceration. It forcefully expels its own respiratory and digestive tracts out of its anus. These sticky, toxic guts entangle and distract the predator while the sea cucumber casually shuffles away. Over the next few weeks, it just regenerates the missing organs like it’s no big deal. It’s the biological equivalent of throwing your wallet at a mugger, if your wallet was your lungs.
