Baseball was once mocked as childish

Before it became America's sacred pastime, it was heavily viewed as the equivalent of playing video games in your mother's basement. In the mid-1800s, prominent editorial newspapers fiercely attacked grown men playing baseball, loudly declaring that running around a dirt field hitting a ball was a deeply childish activity that actively prevented men from participating in serious, productive industrial labor.
