A closer look
Long before his eponymous invention became the dirty, smog-spewing villain of global warming, Rudolf Diesel had a remarkably green vision. He proudly demonstrated his engine at the 1900 World's Fair running entirely on peanut oil. He genuinely wanted it to be a sustainable power source for independent farmers. Unfortunately, the massive petroleum industry quickly stepped in, proving that cheap fossil fuels always ruin a perfectly good nut-based utopia.
