Huygens ground his own glass to find Saturn's rings
Before you could buy high-powered telescopes online, you had to physically grind the lenses yourself. Christiaan Huygens wanted to figure out what the weird bumps on Saturn were, so he just sat down and meticulously ground his own massive pieces of glass. He successfully identified the rings, proving that extreme DIY projects actually pay off.
