In 1930, Muhammad Asad decided that riding a camel on his overland pilgrimage to Mecca was too comfortable, so he drove a rugged automobile through the trackless Arabian desert. The harsh environment practically sandblasted the primitive vehicle to bits, brutally proving that replacing hoofed animals with fragile combustion engines was sometimes a horrible downgrade.
