Why 3D worlds use flat images

Not everything in a digital landscape is fully fleshed out. Sprites are flat, two-dimensional images forced to awkwardly exist inside three-dimensional spaces. To maintain the illusion of depth, the environment often aggressively rotates these flat images to always face you, hiding the fact that they have no back.
