A closer look
Snails have the ability to sleep for up to three straight years if the weather conditions are not strictly optimal for their moisture-dependent survival. When faced with extreme drought, they retreat into their shells, secrete a protective layer of dried mucus to seal the entrance, and enter a state of deep hibernation called estivation. These tiny mollusks basically look at a slightly inconvenient weather forecast and choose to enter a multi-year coma, making them the undisputed champions of aggressively opting out of a bad day
