Clearly, normal hot springs just were not disgusting enough. When acidic geothermal vapor breaks down surrounding rock into fine clay, it creates a bubbling, boiling cauldron of thick gray sludge. It burps and spits hot mud endlessly, looking like a dystopian spa treatment you definitely want to avoid.
