Lava flows are actually pretty slow, but lahars will absolutely wreck your day. When a volcano erupts under a glacier or a crater lake, it violently melts the ice, creating a massive, high-speed avalanche of wet concrete made of mud, boulders, and ash. It rushes down river valleys and casually flattens entire towns without warning.
