Edgar Allan Poe invented detective fiction for a paycheck

The father of gothic poetry was chronically broke and drowning in debt. Seeking a quick paycheck from magazines, Poe wrote 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue' in 1841. He introduced C. Auguste Dupin, a brilliant, eccentric man who solved crimes using deductive reasoning. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle later openly admitted he completely ripped off Poe's character template to create Sherlock Holmes.
