Writing '3/4' is far too convenient. Ancient mathematicians fundamentally refused to use fractions with a numerator greater than one. If they wanted to express three-quarters, they were forced to write it out as '1/2 plus 1/4'. This absolute dedication to unit fractions made simple accounting a sprawling, puzzle-like nightmare of addition that persisted for millennia.
