When you write religious music for a living but secretly despise the guy paying you, you get heavily creative. Composers heavily relied on a technique called 'soggetto cavato' to encode secret messages. They would map the vowels of an enemy's name to specific musical notes, creating a deeply hidden melody that effectively insulted their patron or a rival composer while the oblivious choir literally sang it out loud in church.
