Big Oil owes its supremacy to prohibition, not engineering. When Henry Ford released the Model T, he intentionally made it a flex-fuel vehicle so rural farmers could just ferment their own corn into alcohol to power their cars. He viewed ethanol as the fuel of the future. Unfortunately, the prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s made ethanol illegal and heavily regulated, handing the entire automotive monopoly over to cheap, dirty gasoline.
