Why pay for good acting when you can just psychologically torture your employees? The directors wrote a completely fake mythology about a murderous witch and passed it off to the actors as historical fact. They then dumped them in the woods, starved them, and harassed them at night to capture genuine terror on film. It was gaslighting elevated to a cinematic art form.
