It takes a special kind of pioneer to invent a monster and then completely fail to name it. Romero referred to his undead flesh-eaters strictly as 'ghouls' in the original script. The media and the fans retroactively applied the term 'zombie'—originally tied to Haitian voodoo folklore—to his shuffling corpses, essentially hijacking his own lore.
