Eratosthenes sift finds primes by elimination
Over two millennia ago, Eratosthenes realized that finding prime numbers one by one was totally miserable. So he invented a mathematical sieve: you just list all numbers, cross out the multiples of two, then three, and so on. Whatever survives this ruthless numerical elimination game is a prime. It is brute-force arithmetic at its absolute finest.
