A closer look
Before podcasts existed, the ultimate way to avoid human interaction was to sit on a pillar for thirty years. Known as Stylites, these extreme ascetics in the Byzantine Empire climbed tall columns and just never came down. Symeon the Stylite sat on a fifty-foot pole for 37 years, pulling up his meager meals in a basket. Ironically, by trying to completely isolate himself from society, he became a massive tourist attraction with screaming crowds at his base.
