Centrifugal governors control engine speeds using rotation

Before digital computers managed everything, massive steam engines regulated themselves using two metal balls spinning on a central axis. As the engine spun faster, centrifugal force threw the balls outward, which mechanically closed the steam valve and slowed things down. It was a perfectly elegant, self-correcting analog loop that required absolutely zero software updates.
