A closer look

Long before digital motion capture, choreographer Jack Cole treated human beings like living animation frames. His obsessive staging techniques for cinematic dance numbers isolated body parts with such unnatural, noir-like precision that his dancers looked like rotoscoped comic book characters. He made his cast drill brutal, angular isolations until they bled, practically inventing the concept of treating a human dancer as a completely artificial visual effect.
