When dirt, sand, and pebbles get tired of moving, they settle down in flat layers. Over countless millennia, the sheer weight of this accumulated debris squashes the bottom layers into solid sedimentary rock. It is the Earth's very slow, lazy way of recycling loose surface trash into permanent, heavily compacted structural features.
