If you picture an arid region as endless sand dunes, geology begs to differ. Many areas are covered in desert pavement, a flat surface of tightly packed, interlocking pebbles and gravel. The wind blows away all the fine dust and sand, leaving behind a hard, armored crust that looks exactly like a poorly constructed cobblestone driveway.
