A closer look

Ugandan dictator Idi Amin attempted to solve his country's severe economic issues in the 1970s by simply ordering the central bank to print endless amounts of unbacked money so he could generously pay off his military forces. When his terrified financial advisors gently tried to explain the basic macroeconomic concept of inflation and how printing cash out of thin air would completely destroy the national currency, he reportedly ignored them entirely and just kept running the machines. The resulting hyperinflation devastated the Ugandan economy, proving once again that having absolute political power does not actually grant you the magical ability to rewrite the fundamental laws of supply and demand. You can confidently execute your political rivals and wear as many fake military medals as your uniform can physically support, but the invisible hand of the free market will still aggressively slap you across the face the moment you try to counterfeit your way to prosperity
