Historical downsizing hits everybody, even royal courts. Early tarot and card decks featured four distinct court cards, including a knight mounted on horseback. To streamline the manufacturing process and simplify games, printers eventually fired the cavalry completely, leaving the King, Queen, and Jack to awkwardly handle all the royal duties alone.
