You’d think the oldest known concrete depiction of the cosmos would be carefully unearthed by scholars, but the Nebra Sky Disc was actually yanked out of the dirt by two guys with metal detectors in 1999. They tried to sell this priceless, 3,600-year-old Bronze Age artifact on the black market before a spectacular police sting in a Swiss bar recovered it. The disc proves prehistoric Europeans had a complex understanding of solar and lunar cycles, completely ruining the stereotype that they just banged rocks together.
