A closer look
You wouldn't expect the guy who wrote a terrifying, post-apocalyptic adult novel in broken English to also define children's programming, but Russell Hoban thrived on weirdness. The creator of 'Frances the Badger' had a knack for infusing seemingly innocent children's stories with deep, creeping themes of mortality, abandonment, and existential dread. He essentially tricked generations of parents into letting their toddlers consume high-level philosophical trauma disguised as cute, clockwork animals.
