Poker's legendary 'Dead Man's Hand,' consisting of a two-pair of black aces and black eights, earned its ominous title because it was allegedly the exact hand held by Old West lawman Wild Bill Hickok when he was shot in the back of the head in 1876. Hickok was playing five-card draw at a saloon in Deadwood, South Dakota, and notoriously violated his own strict rule of never sitting with his back to the door, which proved to be a fatal mistake in situational awareness. It is incredibly wild that one of the most famous poker hands in casino history is basically just a grim historical meme about a guy getting permanently logged out of reality while holding mediocre cards. Today, edgy poker players will still confidently brag about drawing the hand, completely ignoring the fact that it literally represents an abysmal failure of strategy that ended in a tragic assassination. If anything, the dead man's hand is just a harsh reminder to always check your six and never trust a cowboy!
