San Francisco cable cars grab a cable underground

Those picturesque trolley cars climbing impossibly steep hills don’t actually have motors propelling them forward. Instead, a massive centralized powerhouse spins miles of steel cable continuously in a trench right under the street. The driver literally operates a giant mechanical claw to physically grip the moving wire, dragging the car along for the ride. It is a Victorian-era ski lift buried in the pavement.
